disAdvantagesDiaphragms

Most women who use a diaphragm have no problems with it. The side effects that some women have include:
  • Some women who use diaphragms may develop frequent urinary tract infections. To avoid infection, you can urinate before inserting the diaphragm and after intercourse. If you get frequent bladder infections, ask your health care provider to check to see if your diaphragm fits correctly.

  • Some women who use diaphragms may develop vaginal irritation. This can be a sign of an allergy to latex or to spermicide. If you have a mild reaction, try switching brands of spermicide to clear up the problem. If that doesn't work, it may mean you have a latex allergy and are reacting to the diaphragm. Stop using the diaphragm until you speak with your health care provider.

  • Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare complication if the diaphragm is left in too long.

  • If the diaphragm is left inside the vagina for more than one day (24 hours), the female runs the risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS), a serious bacterial infection (as with tampons).

  • Does not protect against HIV/AIDS.

  • Needs occasional refitting.

  • cannot be used during your period

  • may be pushed out of place by some male organ sizes, heavy thrusting, and certain sexual positions

  • must be in place every time a woman has vaginal intercourse

  • This method does not protect against STDs. It is recommended the diaphragm be used in conjunction with a condom.

  • Some women are not able to insert the unit into the body. They find it difficult.

  • Women using the diaphragm must apply spermicide to the device prior to use. This means you'll need plenty of spermicide on hand and the spermicidal cream must be reapplied every two hours during sexual intercourse

  • The diaphragm must be fitted by a physician, increasing its cost. If you experience sudden weight fluctuations or have just given birth, the device may need to be refitted

  • Continual use of spermicide can irritate the lining of your vagina and possibly increase your risk of contracting an STD.
